A charming and sexy story about letting go of the past and new beginnings.
“I told you from the beginning, Grace, we were going to crash.”
“Then there’s nothing left to do but burn us to the f-ing ground.”
Grace Nolan wants two things: to succeed in her career and to find her knight in shining armor who’ll sweep her off her feet. She has high hopes for her new job and wishes no one will recognize her as Jade, her paid escort alter ego she turned to pay her way through college. And while she waits to discover her prince charming, she has decided to help out a former ex-porn star fling. What will she discover under Ben’s careless fashion blunders? Could it be the armor she’s been looking for?
“He made me feel like I could be myself. Like I didn’t have to hide. And because of him, because he gave me that safe space, I found myself again.”
When Ben Lockwood was given a chance to work in the adult media industry barely finishing high school, all the wanted to do was be behind the camera. After many years he’s found himself in the vice president chair which turns out to be a bit too big for him. In an effort to prove to himself and his mentor he’s the man for the job, he’s taken on new responsibilities while ridding himself of all distractions especially sex and has enlisted the help of the one woman he’s never been able to get over. Can they work together without crossing the lines or will they find in each other a Reason to Believe?
“I don’t deserve you, Grace… I’m not the happily ever after type.”
An ex-porn star and a former escort, very interesting backgrounds for a hero and heroine, which certainly caught my eye and a subject matter which I think the author handled in a tasteful way.
“Maybe it was a connection that stemmed from the similar way we made our money in the sex industry. Whatever it was, it had filled a hole I hadn’t even know existed.” ~ Ben
Grace has just graduated from college with a degree in business and is looking forward to putting her escort days behind her. She fears her past choice of work will affect her career and love life as it affected her relationship with her family when they found out. I certainly sympathize and believe that people should be given second chances and fresh starts.
“She was able to give me something that no other woman could – acceptance… She wiped my slate clean and I could be anyone I wanted.”
Grace’s emotions were all over the place though, which could be understandable. She needed to find herself first in order to move forward with her life. Sadly she gave me whiplash. Ben on the other hand was easy to read. He had deep-seated self-doubt issues, was sure he had achieved his high power position by pure luck and probably nepotism and was desperately trying to prove himself worthy. I also understood his motivations but for some reason I couldn’t quite connect with him either.
“When the lights were out and I was alone, trivial and useless was exactly how I felt about myself.”
Ben and Grace where very much alike and perfect for other, especially when things started to heat up. They went from zero to burning in seconds, but because of their insecurities and pasts, both refuse to be interested in the other for more than sex, so there’s as much push as there is pull.
“I wanted to be gentle with her. I wanted to manhandle her. It was shocking how my attraction to this woman covered the full spectrum of wants, from kinky to vanilla, from gentle to rough. I wanted to try it all with her. Give it all to her.”
I felt a lack of emotional connection with them, probably because I think they had the potential to be so much more. I also felt there were several situations which didn’t seem organic, but rather felt to be forced in order to achieve a bond between Ben an Grace.
Overall the story is fun, hot and pleasing to read. I liked the thought provoking issues that were included, such as stereotyping, and the matter of working in the creative field.
“You pour a bit of your soul into every project, whether you want to or not.”
Reason to Believe is the second book in the White Lace series by Gina Gordon. It is a standalone, full-length, contemporary romance with lots of sexiness. Told from both points of view, with a happy ending.
