OFF THE HOOK
Fishing for Trouble #1
Releasing April 12, 2016
Welcome to The Buoys, a West Coast haven where love comes in with the tide. Perfect for readers of Jill Shalvis and Susan Mallery, the Fishing for Trouble series features three unforgettable brothers—each of whom is a great catch.
Major league pitcher Liam O’Donnell knows his best days are probably behind him, but that doesn’t mean he’s ready to retire and become a fishing guide. Still, after all the time he’s spent chasing his dreams, he owes it to his brothers to pull his weight around the lodge. The Buoys is their father’s legacy, and they can’t let some developer take it from them. The one snag Liam isn’t counting on is a blast from the past: his ex-wife.The moment Kate Hadley steps out of the seaplane, she knows this assignment is going to be trickier than she thought. She has to persuade the owners to sell—and one of them is Liam O’Donnell. Ten years ago, she made the biggest mistake of her life when she married Liam during a fling in Vegas. Now he’s her only lifeline in the middle of nowhere. Kate’s trying to keep things cool, but Liam just reminds her of the scorching few nights they spent together—and tempts her to make new memories that are just as steamy as the old.
Laura Drewry kicks off another sweet, fun and sexy series. Off the Hook is a second chance romance filled with emotion, easy to relate with characters, witty dialog and a smooth flowing plot that had me hooked.
As a young man, Liam O’Donnell had only ever wanted to be a professional baseball pitcher. He’s achieved his dream and his older and wiser self knows his career is on a downward slope. So while he’s recovering for an injury and his agent is working on getting him a new contract, he’s working on getting the Buoys, his father’s finishing retreat, in tip top shape or else risk having it go to an impersonal developer who’ll most certainly convert it into a generic spa like resort. That doesn’t mean he and his brothers are averse to accepting outside help from said developer. What he didn’t count on was that it would be his ex-wife who absolutely no one knows of, who shows up to help.
Kate Hadley hadn’t planned to board a seaplane to a barely communicated island. But she’s worked hard to get to where she’s at and will do just about anything to get the promotion she’s been dreaming about. Can she convince the man that 10 years ago left her alone in a Las Vegas hotel room to sell his family’s cherished land, the place where he and his brothers grew up in to her firm so she can further her career? With their attraction as strong as ever, can she focus on accomplishing the task at hand or will she be persuaded by Liam to rekindle their relationship even when their careers lead to very different directions?
You can count on Laura Drewry to write a warm fuzzy story, with heart and wit to cuddle up with and Off the Hook totally delivers. I really liked that even though it’s based on widely used elements like second chances and baseball, this story felt different in its fishing setting.
Both Kate and Liam are characters who you can easily relate with. They’re both driven but mostly they’re just human beings who want to find their niche. They hadn’t seen or talked to each other since that night ten years ago, and even though they didn’t know each other very well and had been together for a very short period of time, it’s obvious they had made a profound impact in their lives.
“Lust, fascination, curiosity, and something else he’d never been able to dfine. It was as if being with her had made him feel… alive… along with “smitten.”
Their reunion is less than cordial, but the attraction is still there and since they’re left with no other choice but to work together they actually communicate, get to know one another outside of their young Las Vegas fantasy bubble and quickly fall back into their easy, cute and fun banter, with delicious slow boiling sexual tension.
Though as a reader it was fairly easy to predict where the story would end, I very much enjoyed going on their journey to discover how perfect they were for one another. Even though I liked Liam as a hero and his backstory was heart wrenching, I have to give big kudos to Kate who bravely fought and went after what she wanted.
Liam’s brothers and their longtime family friend Jessie make very interesting supporting characters who I definitely want to get to know.
Finally, even though this is not a sports romance and I’m not a baseball connoisseur, I did like the quotes at the beginning of each chapter.
