Review: Her Perfect Game

Her Perfect Game
Her Perfect Game by Shannyn Schroeder
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Like sexy nerds? How about two totally made for each other hot nerds? Her Perfect Game hits the spot for a fun and easy new adult romance.

Her friends wanted her to celebrate their last spring break together, but she had plans for her real life in the gaming world. After secretly dropping out of college, Charlie Castle is hoping to get a job through a “hackfest.” She expected to finally meet the guy she’s been playing online with for over a year, not her the man who taught her everything she knows about hacking, who also happens to be her sexy ex.

Jonah Best left without a word after graduating college three years ago, but couldn’t fully push thoughts of Charlie aside because he’s never been over Charlie and he’s been her secret online friend for the past year. Knowing she’s close to graduation and that he’ll see her at the hackfest he was to come clean about everything, and also offer her a job. Can he convince her to accept everything he’s offering?

This book has all the elements of new adult book, heroes trying to find themselves, broken hearts, second chances and a sweet reconciliation. There were just a couple of things that made me round my rating to 3 stars. For one, I was a bit disappointed in Jonah. His reason for leaving was flimsy and cowardly. Second, even though there’s a good reason for the story to delve into the actual gaming world, I got distracted whenever the two of them spent too time in cyberspace.

I did love the smart and geeky Charlie, I think there are a lot of us nerd girls out there who can relate with her on some level. She’s self-reliant and sure of herself without needing acceptance or help from Jonah or her friends. I enjoyed the chemistry between Charlie and Jonah which built on their history together.

It was great that their story developed in a Con where I could clearly imagine Star Wars and Trek fans disguised as their favorite characters along with Charlie’s archer persona. It goes to show how the author has a firm grip on her storytelling which gives this quick read a good balance between detail, plot and character development, enough to make it feel like a full length story. I’m really curious to see what’s in store for Felicity, the last nerd in the sexy nerd triad!

Her Perfect Game is book #2 in the Hot and Nerdy trilogy by Shannyn Shroeder. It is told from both points of view and has a happy ending. If you’re looking for a short and hot new adult romance this a novella for you.
