Review: Rock Bottom

Rock BottomRock Bottom by R.K. Lilley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

An achingly rise and fall-out of an all consuming love. Rock Bottom’s flawless writing makes your heart race and ache at the same time.

“She was the one. If I’d ever had a doubt, I didn’t now. She was the one I’d be thinking about, longing for, until I took my last breath. If I lost her tomorrow, I’d pine for her like a lovesick fool. This was the kind of love that only hit you once in your life.”

OMG. I can’t even describe what I am feeling right this moment. All I can say is that I am so glad I didn’t read spoilers; so glad I waited for the release of book 3, because I knew I wouldn’t be able to handle the wait. Yes! I hate intervals between installments, especially after a heart-wrenching train wreck of a book.

First, I would like to say that R.K. Lilley is one of my absolutely favorite authors out there. She has a way of writing consuming stories that take you in so deep, you feel like her characters are real. Her books are racy, painstakingly erotic and yet, they deliver profound plots, dig out emotions and make you writhe, cry, laugh and urge you to become a stalker for further releases.

I knew this book was going to be hard. I knew something very bad happened between T & D, because we saw it first hand in ‘Up in the Air’. I had my guesses; some were accurate, but OMG what a twist, and what THE HELL. My heart horribly aches for Danika, it was as if I wanted to be transported inside the book and soothe her, to tell her everything would be OK. That, eventually her creator was going to give her a happy-ending no matter the pain! (LOL yes I know, I need therapy)

The book begins right were Bad Things ended. Tristan & Danika are happy, they are together and they love each other crazy! Still, Danika is worried about Tristan because he is mourning, and she seems to think he is hot handling the pain very well. She, is also consumed with self-doubt and insecurity about her boyfriend’s behavior. She knows he has changed for her, but to what point? Tristan is in-love and he is doing everything in his power to prove Danika he will be loyal to her and, he really does. He doesn’t cheat on her and I am grateful for that. I just wouldn’t have been able to stomach Tristan as a cheater.

But, the road you pave for your life is mainly based on decisions; and both, T&D make their choices, their own decisions. These, combined with their age, their maturity level, their pasts, their lack of adult guidance and interference from others. Disaster with a capital D seemed imminent.

Tristan decides to go on with the band; he agrees to a record deal and has to be absent for long periods. Danika awaits, she sees him on weekends and when they can fit time. Their encounters are explosive, their chemistry always up front but little by little, Tristan’s destructive behavior comes to life. He begins to drift off, to handle pressure and stress the wrong way. Danika tries being his anchor, but she ends up being the crutch, their relationship turns from lovely to codependent. Tristan makes mistakes, many. Danika also errs but, she stays strong, she is resilient and never allows bad things to overcome her positive attitude. Tristan not so much.

I won’t give away the details but, I can say I hated Dean with every fiber of my being, I hated Twatalie, Marta (Danika’s Mom) and Leticia (Tristan’s Mom). The later to a point, I actually felt sorry for her. Either way, you need to read the book in order for you to judge. The psychology behind Deans actions, yep, I need Freud to tell me what his deal was. We know he was twisted, fucked up to the core but, seriously OMG.. did he secretly/subconsciously had a crush on Tristan? Or was he just angry because Danika never gave him the time of day?.. who knows. What happened to the letter? (Dean is my guess)… what a wreck.

Last but not least, our leading supporting character Frankie!! I dig her. She’s sincere, and unabashed, totally shameless. Even though I found her chapter weird, it was nice to see how she finds Estella, F/F scenes are not my cup of tea, but with her I make the exception; and… Oh dear.. we get a glimpse of former Mr. Cavendish, as in before his fucking perfect Bianca and, let me say… Oh, Shit.

I feel like I’m writing a freaking book now, so I’ll wrap it up with a nice bow. Things happened and these two characters need to grow, to heal and forgive completely in order to find each other again. Danika’s pain is just unbearable and I understand her bitterness. What happened to her was horrible and I understand her feelings but… Tristan is definitely the love of her life and if they heal and find the maturity to put the past behind, they can be happy. I can’t wait to read the next book.. and it’s happening right about now!

“It planted one tiny seed of bitterness inside of me, and over time, that bitter seed would grow. It would flourish
